Book Review: The Mystical Meaning of Dreams

“And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.”Genesis (28:12)

Dreams. We all have them. Sometimes we remember them. Sometimes we go through periods where we insist that we haven’t had any at all. But few of us know that the seriousness of dreams were first expanded upon in the Bible. In The Mystical Meaning of Dreams by Rabbi Avraham Arieh Trugman, we are introduced to the importance of dreams. Rabbi Trugman teaches us the difference between bothersome or illogical dreams and those which touch upon prophecy. This book shares some of the deepest Biblical insights in a very readable and understandable manner.

Rabbi Trugman is an accomplished teacher, writer and musician. With 12 publications to his name, several music CD’s, and hundreds of thousands of followers from over 25 countries reaping the bounty of his Biblical wisdom through social media, it is clear that this Rabbinical dynamo is someone worthwhile to gain insights from.

“People tend to think that Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung were the fathers of dream analysis,” reflects Rabbi Trugman to Israel365. “Actually, the Bible is the first source for emphasizing the importance of dreams. Dreams are discussed no less than ten times in the Bible.”

The Mystical Meaning of Dreams reveals their hidden dimensions through traditional Biblical sources. As Rabbi Trugman points out, “Just like in modern times when there are conflicting associations with dreams, ancient sages also had conflicting views on them.” Rabbi Trugman refers to the fact that calling someone a “dreamer” can imply laziness or not being realistic. Yet, we can also say that “he has big dreams” meaning that he is a visionary who is driven to create a great destiny.

Rabbi Trugman first extrapolates how dreams can be interpreted and what ancient wisdom has to say about dreams. The reader will learn deep spiritual concepts in a practical way for personal understanding.

Then, we are taught a deeper analysis of Joseph’s Biblical dreams. Through this, we gain clarity about our own dreams, including which ones should be taken seriously and which ones are foolishness. “Different levels of the soul will manifest differently in dreams,” clarifies Rabbi Trugman. “If someone eats, drinks or takes drugs before sleep, the animal soul can be awakened, which probably leads to nonsense dreams. But, if we are of clearer mind and spirit, our dreams can touch prophecy. The Bible teaches that many prophets received God’s wisdom when they were in a dream-like state.”

The Mystical Meaning of Dreams shares many traditional sources for teaching the importance of dreams and how to interpret them. Similar to modern psychology, the Talmud states that the body itself produces the images in dreams, sometimes as a review of what has happened to us during the day. The subconscious and unconscious are played back in symbolic terms.

There are dreams that are about what is bothering us and messages which come to tell us how to fix our problems. Dreams can connect us to our deepest potential and our mission in life. Many have had the experience of dreaming about something and then it comes true. This can be considered a form of prophecy. Rabbi Trugman connects how modern psychology mirrors the opinions of Talmudic insights into dreams and the various Biblical stories.

A student of many of today’s  and yesteryear’s greatest Rabbis, Rabbi Trugman has written a fascinating book about a common occurrence. This book will jump-start the reader on how to understand dreams and use them to nurture emotional growth and the furtherance of spiritual goals.
